Terms & Conditions

The terms we work under - what a quote covers, how variations and payment work, and where you stand on materials.

These terms apply to electrical work carried out by Carda Electrics (ABN 52 632 661 477, electrical contractor licence REC 26681) for you. They apply whether you booked us by phone, by email or through this website.

Nothing in these terms takes away any right you have under the Australian Consumer Law. Where these terms and that law disagree, the law wins.

Quotes and Estimates

We quote free, and we don’t charge for coming out to look at the job.

A quote is a fixed price for a defined scope of work. A quote stays open for 30 days unless it says otherwise, and it covers only what’s written in it.

An estimate is our best assessment of a likely cost where the scope can’t be pinned down in advance - usually fault finding, or work behind walls we haven’t opened yet. We’ll tell you which one you’re getting, and we won’t call something a quote when it’s an estimate.

Accepting the Work

Work is booked once you accept a quote in writing - an email, a text or a reply through our form is enough - or once you ask us to proceed and we start. Accepting the quote means accepting these terms.

What the Price Covers

Unless the quote says otherwise, the price includes labour, standard materials, travel within our service area, and the compliance documentation the work requires. It doesn’t include:

  • Making good beyond patching - plastering, painting, tiling or carpentry
  • Work by other trades, including refrigerant work on air conditioning, which requires a separately licensed technician
  • Removing or handling asbestos
  • Anything we couldn’t reasonably have seen when we quoted

Variations

If the job changes, the price changes. That happens most often because something turns up once we open a wall or a switchboard - old non-compliant wiring, a board with no spare capacity, damage nobody knew about.

When it happens we stop, tell you what we’ve found, and give you a price before carrying on. We won’t do extra work and bill you for it afterwards without asking first. If a variation has to be made on the spot for safety, we’ll do the minimum required to make the site safe and talk to you immediately after.

Payment

Invoices are payable within 7 days unless we’ve agreed something else in writing. On larger jobs we may ask for a deposit towards materials before we order them; if we do, it will be on the quote.

If an invoice is unpaid past its due date we may charge reasonable recovery costs. We’d much rather talk to you - if there’s a problem paying, tell us early.

Access to the Site

We need safe, reasonable access to the work area at the agreed time, and access to the switchboard. Please tell us in advance about:

  • Pets, particularly dogs
  • Asbestos, or a building old enough that it’s likely
  • Anything in the work area that shouldn’t be moved
  • Other trades working on site at the same time

If we can’t get access at the booked time and we haven’t been told, we may have to reschedule and charge for the attendance.

Power Interruptions

Most electrical work means the power goes off for part of it. We’ll tell you roughly how long, and we’ll work around medical equipment, home offices, freezers and anything else you tell us about. If continuous power is critical, say so when you book so we can plan for it.

Compliance Certificates

Where the work requires it, we issue a Certificate of Compliance through Energy Safe Victoria and give you a copy for your records. Keep it - it’s the evidence the work was done to standard, and you’ll want it if you sell the property.

Your Rights Under Australian Consumer Law

Our work comes with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Among other things, that means our services must be provided with due care and skill, and be fit for the purpose we agreed.

If something we installed or repaired fails because of how we did it, tell us and we will put it right.

Materials and Equipment

We use materials from established suppliers. Equipment we supply carries its manufacturer’s warranty, and we’ll pass on the details and help you make a claim if you need to.

If you supply the equipment, we’ll install it properly but we can’t warrant the equipment itself, and we may decline to install something that isn’t compliant or isn’t fit for the job. We’ll tell you why if that happens.

Cancelling or Rescheduling

Let us know at least 24 hours before a booked appointment and there’s no charge. Inside that, we may charge for materials already ordered or for the time we’ve held. Cancellations for genuine emergencies and illness aren’t charged.

We may also need to reschedule occasionally - an emergency callout can displace a booked job. We’ll tell you as soon as we know and get you back in quickly.

Emergency and After-Hours Work

We attend emergencies outside business hours. Emergency work is charged at our after-hours rate, which we’ll tell you before we attend, and the priority on an emergency callout is making the site safe rather than completing a full repair. Any further work gets quoted normally.

Your Rights Under the Australian Consumer Law

Our services come with guarantees that can’t be excluded. You’re entitled to a remedy if the work isn’t carried out with due care and skill, isn’t fit for the purpose you told us about, or isn’t delivered within a reasonable time. For a major failure you can cancel and seek a refund, or seek compensation for reasonably foreseeable loss.

Nothing on this page limits those rights.

Liability

Subject to the Australian Consumer Law and to the extent the law allows, our liability for a claim connected to our work is limited to re-supplying the services or paying the cost of having them re-supplied, and we’re not liable for indirect or consequential loss.

We are not liable for:

  • Faults in an existing installation that we were not engaged to work on
  • Loss caused by information you gave us that turned out to be wrong
  • Damage arising from equipment you supplied
  • Delay caused by something outside our reasonable control

We carry public liability insurance and can provide the certificate of currency on request.

Privacy

We handle your personal information as described in our Privacy Policy.

If Something Goes Wrong

Call us first - most things are quickest to fix by talking. If we can’t sort it out between us, either of us can take it to Consumer Affairs Victoria, and nothing here stops you going to Energy Safe Victoria about the safety or compliance of electrical work.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia.

We may update these terms. The version that applies to your job is the one current when you accepted the quote.
