Old Wiring in Hawthorn, and What Actually Needs Doing
Old wiring is not automatically a problem. Rubber-insulated cable from the 1930s is long past its service life and worth replacing. Mid-century TPS in good condition often has years left in it. Telling those apart is the job, and it is why we look before we quote rather than quoting a rewire on sight.
What we do look for: whether the circuits are on RCDs, whether the board has been extended past what it was built for, whether earlier work was done by a licensed electrician, and what condition the cable is in where we can see it. In a Hawthorn terrace that usually means a look at the meter box, the ceiling space and one or two points.
Then you get the findings in writing, in order of what matters. If a rewire is the answer we stage it room by room so you keep power through it, and we make good behind us.
We Look Before We Quote
Meter box, ceiling space and a couple of points. A rewire quoted from the kerb is a guess.
RCDs Where the Standards Want Them
Victorian regulations require residual current devices on new and altered circuits. We check what is already there.
Staged So You Keep Power
Rewires go in room by room rather than shutting the house down for a week.
Heritage-Aware Work
Lath and plaster, pressed ceilings and original cornices need working around, not through.
