How We Actually Find an Intermittent Fault
Start at the board. Which device is tripping tells you what kind of fault it is: an RCD points at leakage to earth, a circuit breaker points at overload or a short. Those are different problems and they get looked for differently.
Then split the circuit. We isolate sections and measure insulation resistance until the fault sits in one part of the run rather than the whole house. On an intermittent one that often means loading the circuit to provoke it, which is why the visit takes longer than a repair does.
Then find the cause, not just the location. A wet outdoor point that has been tripping for two years does not need the circuit disconnected, it needs the enclosure replaced. Disconnecting the offending circuit and leaving is the cheap answer, and it is why some faults come back with a different electrician’s name on the last invoice.
We charge for the diagnosis honestly: it is time, and we tell you roughly how much before we start rather than pretending it is free.
The Device Tells You the Fault
An RCD trip and a breaker trip are different problems. Which one went narrows it immediately.
Split, Measure, Repeat
Insulation resistance testing section by section until the fault is in one part of the run.
We Find the Cause
Not just which circuit. Disconnecting the circuit and leaving is not a repair.
Priced Before We Start
Diagnosis is time, so we tell you what it is likely to take before you commit to it.
