Electrical Services for Glen Iris, Victoria

Get Your Free Quote

Glen Iris is family houses on the Gardiners Creek side and a long run of walk-up flat blocks through the middle, most of them built between about 1960 and 1980.

Those blocks are the reason a lot of our work here is switchboard work. A six-flat building has a meter room full of boards the same age as the building, and they all reach the end of their service life within a few years of each other. Managing that as one job rather than six separate emergencies is most of what we help owners corporations with.

We also do the ordinary house work in the streets around them.

Six Boards, One Meter Room, All the Same Age

In a 1970s Glen Iris block the meter room usually holds one board per flat plus a common-property board, all installed at once and all now well past what they were built for. Nothing is wrong with them until something is, and then it is wrong on a Sunday.

The useful thing a committee can do is stop treating that as six unrelated problems. We survey the room, tell you the condition of each board, and give you a staged plan with a fixed price per board. You can then do them over two budget years instead of replacing them one emergency at a time at emergency rates.

Where a board is genuinely fine, we say so. A survey that recommends replacing everything is not a survey.

01

One Survey, One Plan

Condition of every board in the room, and a staged order to do them in, with a price against each.

02

Fixed Price Per Board

Priced individually, so the committee can approve part of it and defer the rest.

03

Residents Told What Happens

How long the power is off per flat and when. We put it in writing for you to circulate.

04

Labelled and Certified

Every board labelled correctly and a compliance certificate issued for each one.

04 - Homes

Electrical Work for Glen Iris Houses

The houses here are mostly interwar and post-war, on decent blocks, and they age the way that stock does.

Board replacements that put residual current protection across every circuit. Rewiring where the cable rather than the board has had enough, staged so you keep power through it. Extra circuits for an induction cooktop, a heat pump or a car charger, with a check of what the mains will carry before anything is ordered. Lighting, including halogen to LED, which drops both the load and the heat sitting in the ceiling.

Working with Carda Electrics in Glen Iris

For a committee the useful thing is not the hourly rate, it is knowing what will happen and when. You get a written scope, a price against each item, and a date. If we find something in the room that changes the picture, you hear about it before we do anything about it.

Everyone on the tools is licensed, insured and NECA accredited, and the same team covers Malvern and the rest of the inner east.

06 - What it costs

What It Costs in Glen Iris

For a block we price each board separately rather than quoting the room as one number, because that is what lets a committee stage the work across budgets.

No call-out surprises

Quotes are free and there's no charge for coming out to look at the job. You'll know what it costs before you decide whether to go ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't see yours? Call us on 0433 577 910.

What areas do you service?

We provide service throughout Melbourne Bayside and surrounding suburbs.

Is there a difference between an electrician and electrical contractor?

An electrician is a worker in the electrical industry that has completed the relevant training and accreditation. Whilst an electrical contractor is a business that holds the appropriate insurances and licences to employ electricians to complete electrical work.

Are you insured?

Yes, all contractors are insured. We have public liability insurance and can provide documentation on request.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes we do. Contact us with your job details and we will either quote you over the phone or arrange a time to come and see you.

Why should I use a NECA accredited electrician?

A NECA accredited electrician is trained to work safely and to current Victorian standards, and NECA keeps that training current as the standards change. It also means the contractor is licensed and insured, and you can ask to see the documentation.

What is a Certificate of Electrical Safety?

It is the record that electrical work was done to the wiring rules. Your licensed electrician completes and signs it on finishing the work and lodges it with Energy Safe Victoria, which is the regulator rather than the issuer. You keep a copy. It is the document a buyer, insurer or property manager asks for later, so it is worth filing somewhere you will find it.

Are LEDs worth all the fuss?

They are, and the reason is heat. An incandescent globe turns most of the power it draws into heat rather than light, which is why it is too hot to touch. An LED puts far more of what it draws into light and runs cool, so it gives you the same brightness for a fraction of the electricity and lasts a great deal longer. Start with the lights you leave on longest, because that is where the difference shows up on a bill first.

How do I know which electrician to use?

Three things are worth checking. That they are licensed, and will give you the number so you can look it up. That the quote is in writing against an agreed scope, so you can compare one price with another instead of guessing. And that people in your own area have been happy with the work, which is what reviews are for.

Carda Electrics is locally owned and operated, our licence number is REC 26681, quotes are free and there is no charge for coming out to look at the job. The Google reviews are on this page for you to read before you call.
